Green North Energy’s pilot plant granted environmental permit
Green North Energy’s first green hydrogen and ammonia plant has been granted environmental and water management permits, allowing the Naantali project to proceed without interruption. The green hydrogen products will help replace climate-damaging fossil fuels, improve security of supply, and create jobs in the green transition sector.
Green North Energy, founded by the engineering and consulting company Elomatic, is developing a plant in Naantali to produce green hydrogen products, such as synthetic fuels and chemicals, using renewable electricity. The company primarily focuses on refining hydrogen into green ammonia, which also enhances Finland’s energy self-sufficiency and security of supply.
The environmental impact assessment of the plant in the EIA procedure was completed last September. Now, the Regional State Administrative Agency for Southwestern Finland has granted the project an environmental permit and a conditional water management permit. The conditions relate to actions that may need to be taken based on sediment samples and nature value assessments, as well as the arrangement of water intake area usage rights.
The project was granted a green transition priority procedure, which aims to enable faster processing of permit applications for green transition projects at the regional state administrative agency. With the acquisition of permits and the partnership established with Meridiam, the project planning can continue without interruption.
“This is a large-scale project that takes time to develop, and the permits are a significant step towards the investment decision. I believe that the success of our project will instill confidence in Finland’s entire hydrogen economy,” says Jussi Ylinen, CEO of Green North Energy.
Green North Energy’s plant will be built in the Luolala industrial area. The area is a significant hub for society, where the company’s operations fit excellently. It also has excellent logistical connections and the opportunity to utilize waste heat in Turku’s district heating network. From the beginning, the environment and safety have been the most important design criteria for the project, and they have been developed in good cooperation with the relevant authorities.
